Rory Dax Paton is a Western Australian visual artist who will be revealing his debut solo exhibition at Zekka on King Street from 3 December to 21 December 2011. Paton, 30, has recently returned home to Perth after spending several years abroad studying and working in London, Glasgow, Melbourne and Switzerland.
The exhibition will open with an exclusive launch party in the space on Friday 2 December with 150 guests including arts and fashion media, artists, fashion designers, filmmakers and arts industry representatives. Paton studied Fine Arts at WAAPA, majo ring in Printmaking. He also has a degree Electronic Arts (Honours) from Curtin University.
Paton has worked with time-lapse cinematographer Maxim Ford to create a yearlong timelapse and has also worked with Western Australian animation creator Pierce Davison, to design and construct motion control camera equipment for Davison Bros. Productions. From 2003 to 2009, Paton studied and worked in ink painting, exclusively on paper, in black and white but since 2009 has focused on increasing his understanding of colour, within the field of expressionism.
His debut exhibition features ink, watercolour, gouache, pastel, charcoal and pencil on paper. Main visual themes include explosion, dissipation and the apprehension of beauty and the style has been determined by a refined aggression. In 2008, Paton started the iconic Wolfe Wolfe Gallery in Brunswick, Melbourne with Travis Vella.
Paton cites Helen Frankenthaler, Joseph Zago, Emile Nolde and Dao Xi as his major influences and hopes to one day take up a residency in Japan or China to study ink painting. The exhibition will be open to the public daily from Saturday 3 December to Wednesday 21 December and entry is free. All artworks will be for sale.
